Nerve cell, TEM
Nerve cell. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a neuron (nerve cell), showing characteristic Nissl body (dark red lines), numerous golgi apparatus (curved pink lines), lysosomes (red circles) and numerous mitochondria (orange). The Nissl body is the site of protein synthesis within the cell. It contains granular endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and many ribosomes (small dots). The ER produces the neurotransmitters needed to relay impulses from the central nervous system around the body. Magnification: x8000 at 10 centimetres wide.
