Indian Moon Moth Scales (SEM)
Indian Moon Moth scales. Scanning electron micrograph of the wing scales of an Indian Moon Moth or Indian Luna Moth (Actias selene). This moth is found in many countries including Japan, India, Nepal and many islands in eastern Asia. Its wings are predominantly pale green in colour with a white abdomen, head, thorax and white at the base of the wings. A distinctive dark pink fascia runs along the leading edge of the forewings and an eyespot of a paler pink with darker detail are on all wings. The central part of the tail is also pink. They are known to fly mainly at night. Magnification x1950 (x480 at 10cm wide).
