Insulin injection in diabetes
Insulin injection. Diabetic teenage girl injecting herself in the abdomen with insulin. She has diabetes mellitus. This disorder affects glucose sugar metabolism, where sugar is not oxidised due to a lack of the pancreatic hormone insulin. Treatment is based on a strict diet and the use of daily insulin injections to maintain the blood-sugar balance. This is a FlexPen from NovoRapid, a pre-filled insulin pen used by diabetics. It has a dial at one end for metering out the correct dose of insulin. Once all the insulin in the cartridge has been used the device can be thrown away.
