US Naval Observatory
US Naval Observatory, Washington DC, USA. The USNO was established in 1830 to provide astronomical timings and data for US shipping. These buildings were erected in 1893 on Observatory Hill to a design by Richard Morris Hunt. They replaced the Old Naval Observatory (in Foggy Bottom, near the river). The main features here are a transit house (Building 8, left) and the Main Building (centre and right). The latter includes Building 1 and the James Melville Gilliss library (conical roof, far right). Building 1 houses administration offices and a tower (centre left) with a dome for the 12-inch Clark/Saegmueller refracting telescope.
