Crystallography planes
Crystallography planes. Diagram of the orientation and direction of a set of crystal planes labelled with vector indices using the numbers 0, 1 and minus 1. The notation system used in crystallography is the Miller index, where the combined index points in a direction orthogonal to the crystal plane it represents. The green lines are right-angles between pairs of indices that represent planes perpendicular to each other. Excluding the '000' combination, there are a total of 26 indices using the numbers 0, 1 and minus 1, giving rise to the 26-sided polygon shown here. Such notation systems help scientists study and describe crystal structures.
