Curiosity rover on Mars, artwork
Curiosity rover on Mars. Artwork of NASA's Curiosity rover in a rocky landscape in the Gale Crater on Mars. This crater was caused by an asteroid impact millions of years ago. The rover landed here on 6 August 2012, on a mission to investigate the Martian climate and geology. It will assess whether environmental conditions were favourable for microbial life, as well as providing data to aid future human exploration. Currently, Mars is a rocky desert world with no surface water. The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide and Martian surface temperatures are well below freezing.
