Sural nerve block. Artwork of a syringe being used to inject a local anaesthetic to numb the sural nerve, a procedure known as a nerve block. Nerve blocks applied at the ankle allow surgery to be carried out on the foot. Below the ankle, this nerve provides sensation for the outer side of the foot down to the little toe (see C016/6838 and C016/6839). The injection is applied in the area indicated (red line) with landmarks used to aid correct placement (blue line and black circle). For all five injections for a complete foot nerve block, see C016/6830 to C016/6834.
