Curiosity rover drill area on Mars, 2013
Curiosity rover drill area on Mars. Mosaic image of a 1-metre wide area at the 'John Klein' site being investigated by the Curiosity rover on Mars. Instruments used here included the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS), the Mars Hand Lens imager (MAHLI), the Dust Removal Tool (DRT), the Chemistry and Camera probe (ChemCam), and tests called 'percuss on rock'. The area actually drilled is just above centre, while other areas in this view were examined but not drilled. NASA's Curiosity rover landed on Mars on 6 August 2012, on a mission to investigate the Martian climate and geology. Image obtained with the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on 23 January 2013.
