Merchant's token, 19th century
Metal merchant's token for Atherton's Wild Cherry Syrup. The token reads, 'Try Atherton's Wild Cherry Syrup for Coughs & Colds'. Tokens such as these were used as an alternative currency and were exchanged for goods. Tokens were made of cheaper, lighter metals and were of lower value than money. They also served as advertisements for the merchant's products. This token is from the U.S.A. and dates from the nineteenth century.
