Obverse of metal merchant's token, for E. W. Hall. The token reads, 'To Purify the Blood, use Atherton's Pills'. Tokens such as these were used as an alternative currency and were exchanged for goods. Tokens were made of cheaper, lighter metals and were of lower value than money. They also served as advertisements for the merchant's products. This token is from New York, U.S.A. and dates from the nineteenth century.
