It is 88 kilometres in diameter and 4.5 kilometres deep. Here, the western half of the crater is in deep shadow. The central peak is 2.5 kilometres in height. The satellite crater Piccolomini M 23 kilometres across is on the outer edge of the rim at lower right. The Piccolomini impact crater formed in the Upper Imbrian period, 3.8 to 3.2 billion years ago.
