Hexabenzocoronene molecule, AFM image
Hexabenzocoronene molecule, atomic force microscopy (AFM) image. This molecule (hexabenzocoronene, HBC) is a hydrocarbon that is being studied as a potential nanographene. It is 1.4 nanometres in diameter and was imaged using non-contact atomic force microscopy with a carbon monoxide functionalized tip. The molecule exhibits carbon-carbon bonds of different length and bond order. It was synthesized at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Toulouse, and imaged by IBM researchers. This image was published in 2012, in a paper titled 'Bond-Order Discrimination by Atomic Force Microscopy'.
