Horse chestnut petiole, light micrograph
Horse chestnut petiole. Light micrograph of a section through a horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) petiole - the stalk of a leaf. The outside of the petiole is the epidermis (red-black). Underneath the epidermis is a layer of cells of collenchyma tissue (violet). Next is a thick cortex of parenchyma cells (light violet), each of which stores starch (yellow). Next a horseshoe-ring of vascular bundles - the top is the phloem (grey-yellow), with sieve tubes and plates. Next the xylem (brown). The tissue at the centre is more parenchyma (grey), which is also full of starch (yellow). Magnification: x7 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
