Freeze-dryer
Freeze-dryer. Technician loading samples into a lyophiliser, or freeze-dryer. This machine is used to freeze-dry food samples for long-term storage. The sample is first frozen and then exposed to a vacuum, which causes the water to sublimate (change from a solid to gas) from the sample. Photographed at the European Commission's Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), Geel, Belgium.
