Large Hadron Collider - the CMS Detector
A physicist works in the CMS general-purpose particle detector at CERN during the 2013 shut-down of the Large Hadron Collider. The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector is constructed in separate vertical layers which can be moved apart so as to allow work on different parts when experiments are not running. The image shows an angled view of one face of one section, with the muon chambers set within the red-painted iron return yoke. The central core contains the 7m diameter superconducting wire solenoid and its associated tracker and calorimeter detectors.
