Dried-up spring
Dried-up spring. Abandoned water trough in an area where a spring went dry because of excessive ground water pumping nearby. This area, part of the Great Basin region in the south-western USA, is in the state of Nevada. Seventeen wild horses died here in 2001 when the spring dried up. Nevada ranchers are opposing plans to build a pipeline to pump billions of gallons of water annually to Las Vegas. They fear the removal of so much water from their valleys would dry up the springs and make ranching impossible. Photographed near Baker, Nevada, USA.
