Azteca ants preying on a grasshopper
Group of Azteca ants (Azteca andreae) preying on a grasshopper. These ants live symbiotically within the trumpet tree (Cecropia obtusifolia, leaf that the ants are on). The ants protect the plant from parasites and insects, while the plant provides the ants with food and shelter. The stems of the plant have small, naturally occurring orifices (called domatia) for the ants to colonise.
