Blood supply of the head. Coloured frontal 3D computed tomography (CT) angiogram of the head of a healthy 38 year old man. Highlighted in yellow is the left internal carotid artery (centre right), which carries blood to the brain from the heart. At the level of the mandible (lower jaw), the left external carotid artery (right) branches off to supply blood to the outer periphery of the head. In blue is the brain's venous drainage system, which returns blood to the heart. Running down top to centre is the superior sagittal sinus. Curving around the sides of the skull are the transverse sinuses, leading to the sigmoid sinuses beneath the eye sockets and draining into the left and right jugular veins.
