Blotching on an orange, UV screening
Blotching on an orange. Fluorescence pattern showing blotching in an orange undergoing ultraviolet (UV) screening. This process is carried out at packing houses for citrus fruits. Those oranges that display the characteristic 'fluorescence signature' associated with the presence of blue or green mould (see C021/4932) are culled. Oranges with blotches, as shown here, may also warrant attention. This research was carried out by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the US Department of Agriculture.
