Smoking research
Smoking research. Reference cigarette being lit in a laboratory as part of research into tobacco smoking. An oxygen supply and valve is at right. Reference cigarettes are for research purposes only and are not for human consumption. The need for a set of international standard cigarettes for research purposes was identified in the 1960s. The first standard was produced in 1974, with two further standards produced in 1989 and 2001. They are provided by the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, USA.
