Artificial heart, artwork
Artificial heart. Artwork showing an artificial heart (white, centre) implanted in a human patient's chest. The artificial heart is connected to the existing blood vessels (veins and arteries), receiving blood from the vena cava (blue, vertical), pumping it to the lungs for oxygenation, receiving it back (pulmonary veins shown in blue) and pumping it around the body through the aorta (main body artery, red). The first successful implantation of an artificial heart in a human took place in 1982.
