Flight patterns of a fly, artwork
Flight patterns of a fly. Artwork of three flight patterns observed in flies (order: Diptera). Spiral flight patterns (top right) are seen in female flies when they lay their eggs. The flight pattern at lower right consists of straight flight paths punctuated by rapid ninety degree turns (or saccades). This is thought to have evolved as part of an optimal fractal-like searching strategy. Other flight patterns may help flies sense and locate a food source.
