Extratropical cyclone, UK, February 2014
Extratropical cyclone. Satellite image of an extratropical cyclone over the UK on 12 February 2014. This comma-shaped cloud pattern is the product of 'conveyor belt' circulation. This storm brought heavy rain, winds that exceeding 160 kilometres per hour, and severe flooding, damage and disruption. Thousands of soldiers were deployed in southern England to help with flood recovery. Image data obtained by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on NASA's Terra satellite, and provided by the Land Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for EOS (LANCE) project.
