Gunshot wound, 1865. Wounded leg of John white, a 19 year old Union army soldier who fought during the American civil war. Although surgeons removed the gunshot pellet, the patient eventually died from septicaemia. Part of a series of photographs and cases intended, at the behest of Surgeon General William Hammond, for publication in Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (1870-1888).
