Alkane alkene in bromine water
Alkane/alkene in bromine water. Test tubes containing the alkenes benzene and cyclohexene, and the alkane cyclohexane with bromine water. Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons, whereas alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons. When mixed with bromine water, alkenes react with the bromine to decolourise the solution. In contrast, alkanes do not react (unless ultraviolet light is used to initiate the reaction), leaving the solution a brown colour.
