Dandelion pollen, SEM
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Autumn Hawkbit (Scorzoneroides autumnalis) pollen adhered to the hairs at the base of the flower. Like dandelion pollen grains, the pollen of this species has an intricate exine, with numerous large spines. These are usually to help the pollen grain adhere to furry animal coats and the body hairs of insects which feed at the flower. Pollen bears the male reproductive cells of plants. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
