Hanshin Expressway, which collapsed from the roots and overturned for nearly a kilometer after the Great Hanshin Earthquake, in Higashinada Ward, Kobe City.
At 5:46 a.m. on January 17, 1995, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake centered on Awaji Island struck the Hanshin area. The earthquake caused damage in 12 prefectures, including Hyogo and Osaka. 5,348 people were killed, 33,222 were injured, and 109,464 houses were destroyed or damaged (as of February 15 of the same year).
