Global fires, GEOS simulation
Global fires. Supercomputer simulation of global fires, based on satellite observations and centred on Australia. Fires (red-yellow dots) eject black and organic carbon clouds (smoke, green) that are carried great distances by the winds. Desert dust plumes (orange) are seen over the Atlantic. This image was produced using NASA's Goddard Earth Observing System-5 (GEOS-5) and the Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) atmospheric model. It is shown on a spherical projection of the Earth's surface. The simulation covered the period 1 September 2006 to 10 April 2007. Image published in 2013.
