Polaris nuclear missile launch, 1983. Test launching of an unarmed British Polaris nuclear missile from a submerged British nuclear-powered submarine HMS Revenge (S-27) in the Atlantic near Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA. This was the tenth in a series of Polaris test flights. The UGM-27 Polaris was developed for the US Navy and the UK's Royal Navy. Designed to be launched from a submarine, it is a type of submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM). It was in service from 1961 to 1996. Photographed on 9 June 1983.
