1856 Princess many-finned Sea Monster
On July 8, 1856, about 50 miles south of the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, Capt. A. R. N. Tremearne and the crew of the Princess saw a large fish with a walruslike head and twelve forward-pointing dorsal fins. Someone fired a rifle at the animal, hitting it in the head. Latitude accurate 34Ă'° 56' S.; Longitude accurate 18Ă'° 14' E. At one p.m. saw a very large fish, with a head like a The back was from 20 to 30 feet long; also a great length of tail. Fired and hit it near the head with a rifle-ball. This is an example of the recurring many finned sea monster found in several accounts."
