Radiocarbon AMS detector
The final-stage detector of the accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) in the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, for dating samples of organic material. From the stream of carbon ions generated by the sample, only the carbon-14 are allowed to reach this detector and comparison with the quantity of more stable carbon-12 and carbon 13 atoms gives a basis for calculating the age of the original sample.
