Moth communication research
Moth research. Preparation of an experiment to investigate the strategies employed by insects in using scents and pheromones to detect food or mates. A moth (Agrotis ipsilon) is placed inside a small robotic chamber. The apparatus records its movements and the electrical activity through its antennae. The orientation behaviour of the insect directs the robot to the source of odour. Photographed at the Laboratory of Insect Physiology, Signalling and Communication, INRA, Versailles, France.
