Deinococcus sp. coccoid prokaryote, SEM
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Deinococcus sp., Coccoid bacterium that is highly resistant to extreme environmental conditions. This species was isolated from an environment that had high levels of polyaromatic hydrocarbon compounds. It is known to degrade hydrocarbon compounds. Deinococcus sp. have thick cell walls that show gram-positive staining, but they include a second membrane and thus are closer in structure to gram-negative bacteria. Deinococcus radiodurans (former Micrococcus radiodurans) is an extremophile bacterium and is the most radiation resistant organism known. Magnification: x3,400 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
