Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, SEM
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (also known as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans), rod-shaped, chemolithotrophic bacterium. It lives in pyrite deposits and metabolizes iron and sulphur, producing sulfuric acid as a by product. T. ferrooxidans is responsible for the oxidation of iron and inorganic sulphur compounds in areas such a mine tailings and coal deposits. Magnification: x2,200 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
