Shown here are sulphur crystal deposits on the surface of a grass blade near a steam vent at Kilauea Volcano, Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. Sulphur is a yellow crystalline solid. It is occurs commonly in three different forms: pure elemental sulphur, sulphides and sulphate minerals. Sulphur is an essential element of living forms and is found in two amino acids, cysteine and methionine. It is primarily used in fertilizers but can be used for gunpowder, matches, insecticides and fungicides. Magnification: x600 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
