Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of agate from Blue Hole, Usan, Montrose, Scotland. Agate is a form of fine grained microcrystalline quartz. This image shows banded layers of chalcedony. Although agate can be found in a range of rock types it is predominantly associated with metamorphic rock. It is a brightly coloured, banded, semi-precious gemstone which is the birth stone for Gemini. Magnification: x14 at 10cm wide.
