Hylaeochelys turtle in a Cretaceous sea, illustration. This turtle has died and under the right conditions its remains will become fossilised to be discovered millions of years later. This specimen is also known as the Portland Turtle, for the discovery of its fossils at Portland, near Weymouth, UK. The Portland specimen dates from the Late Cretaceous, around 100 to 66 million years ago. Other animals seen here include ammonites and fish.
