Polaris missile launch, 1964
Polaris missile launch. Polaris A-2 missile being launched at the surface from the USS Henry Clay (SSBN-625) submarine on 20th April 1964. The objects flying through the air around the missile are launch adapters designed to detach themselves automatically once the missile has left the tube. Polaris was a two-stage solid-fuelled submarine-launched nuclear missile. This was the first demonstration that Polaris submarines could launch missiles from the surface as well as from beneath the surface. Photographed in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Kennedy, Florida, USA.
