Blood smear, light micrograph. Among the erythrocytes, or red blood cells, four leukocytes, or white blood cells, can be seen. The two cells located on the right are mature neutrophils. The leukocyte located in the centre is a young neutrophil or band cell. The left cell is a basophil, the more infrequent leukocyte. The erythrocytes have become crenated (spiky). Magnification: x900 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
