Temple column and section, Eleusis
A column drum and section of a typical Greek column showing the characteristic vertical hollow grooves known as fluting. The shaft is wider at the bottom than at the top, because its entasis (convex curve), beginning a third of the way up, imperceptibly makes the column slightly more slender at the top. Eleusis was the site of the Eleusinian Mysteries and the birthplace of Aeschylus.
