One week after the Great Hanshin Earthquake, citizens lined up in long lines at public bathhouses that were still open for business (in Minatomachi, Hyogo Ward).
At 5:46 a.m. on January 17, 1995, a major earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck the Hanshin region, with its epicenter on Awaji Island. The earthquake affected 12 prefectures, mainly Hyogo and Osaka Prefectures. 5,348 people died, 33,222 were injured, and 109,464 houses were destroyed or damaged (as of February 15, 1995).
