At 5:46 a.m. on January 17, 1995, a major earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck the Hanshin region, with its epicenter on Awaji Island. As of February 15, 1995, 5,348 people were killed, 33,222 injured, and 109,464 houses collapsed or damaged.
