Fatty liver, light micrograph
Light micrograph of fatty liver disease. This is periportal (zone 1) hepatic steatosis, where hepatocytes show large fat vacuoles (white). Zone 1 steatosis appear in several pathologies, including kwashiorkor, total parenteral nutrition, and methotrexate or steroids therapy. In non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) this location is more frequent and severe in paediatric cases. The hepatic sinusoids are filled with blood (red). Stained with haematoxylin and eosin. Magnification: x90 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
