Polarized light micrograph of metformin crystals. Metformin is used to treat non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, also known as type 2 diabetes. It controls blood sugar levels by reducing the production and secretion of glucose by the liver. It also helps lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and blood triglyceride levels.
