Exploration of a red dwarf star system, illustration
Exploration of a red dwarf star system. Illustration of spacecraft (lower right) exploring the planetary system of a red dwarf star. Red dwarf stars have masses and luminosities much less than that of the Sun. Planets around such stars may orbit close to the star in the habitable zone, where the temperature may be suitable for liquid water to exist on the surface of the planet. An example of such a star with known planets is Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Sun.
