Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), also known as carbon sequestration, is designed to reduce global emissions of the greenhouse gas. CCS technologies are being developed that will trap the CO2 emitted from power stations and industrial plants and store it beneath ground, potentially mitigating climate change. However, there are concerns that such storage could induce earthquakes or faults that release the CO2. This illustration is based on a CCS project to store CO2 in sandstone in Decatur, Illinois, USA.
