Garden cosmos anthers, SEM
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains on Cosmos bipinnatus anthers. C. bipinnatus is a flowering herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family, known commonly as garden cosmos or Mexican aster. It is a common plant of open fields and roadsides. The variably coloured flowers also make it a popular ornamental garden plant. Each flower head consists of 8 ray florets that surround numerous tiny disc florets. Each disc floret represents small, reproductive flowers. The disc floret anthers are the male reproductive parts that produce the pollen. Magnification: x50 when printed at 10cm wide.
