Anti-nuclear power plant demonstration near the Prime Minister's Office
No" to the resumption of the Ooi Nuclear Power Plant
June 29, 2012, Tokyo, Japan - Tens of thousands of people rally around Japanese prime minister's official residence in a mass protest on Friday, June 29, 2012, against the restart of two idled reactors at the Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture, some 496km west of Tokyo, for the first reactivation since last year's Fukushima nuclear crisis.
Nuclear power supplied almost one third of Japan's electricity before last year's Fukushima disaster, but all 50 of the country's reactors have been offline for safety checks since early May. Despite public safety concerns, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has approved restarting the two reactors in western Japan to avoid power shortages in the coming summer months.
