Salivary glands, illustration
Illustration showing the positions of the three major salivary glands and the tubarial glands. The three major salivary glands are the sublingual gland, beneath the tongue, the submandibular gland, below the lower jaw, and the parotid gland, just in front of the ears. The tubarial glands, which are located behind the nose, were discovered in 2020. It is thought that they lubricate the nasopharynx and oropharynx, the portions of the throat behind the nose and mouth respectively., by FERNANDO DA CUNHA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
