Guericke Crater on the Moon, Ranger 7 image, 1964. This image shows Guericke Crater (upper centre, 63 kilometres across), from a distance of 1335 kilometres. Around the crater is the dark surface of Mare Nubium. This image was taken 8.5 minutes before Ranger 7 impacted the Moon on 31 July 1964. Ranger 7 was the first of the Ranger series to be entirely successful. It transmitted over 4000 high-quality images over the final 17 minutes of flight. Ranger 7 was launched by NASA on 28 July 1964, impacting the Moon on 31 July 1964.
